Logbook of the Bark Congress, 1845-1847.

Daily record kept by an un-named member of the crew on the Bark Congress out of Mystic, Connecticut. The vessel was on a whaling voyage to the northwest coast of America and to New Zealand. The entries include the wind direction and relative speed, sightings and the capture of whales and black fish, and boiling and stowing sperm whale oil. The captain of the vessel was Austin M. Lester. Of particular note are the variety of stamps used in the volume to indicate right whales, humpback whales, black fish, and even a dolphin.
